Big Sisters of North Bay and District was founded in July 1975 by the North Bay Women's Centre. The agency had conducted a Needs Assessment which determined a gap in service to women and girls in the North Bay area. From 1975--2008 the agency provided programs and services to local girls and young women. Programs included the traditional matching program, Sister Angel, Go Girls!, Victims Assistance workshops, Child Safety training, In School Mentoring and Youth Host programs.
In September 2007 the local Big Brothers agency closed it's doors. Big Sisters was asked to assume the role of both Big Brothers and Big Sisters. On January 31, 2008 the Big Sisters Board of Directors voted to assume this responsibility and expand to become " Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Bay and District.
The Board and staff are pleased to be actively delivering services to local boys and girls. In 2008 alone we have provided mentoring services, free camp experiences, a field trip to Santa's Village, workshops, evening programs, Achievement Fund sponsorships and much more.
We are currently in the process of receiving our new Letters Patent, so that we are registered officially with the Province of Ontario, as Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Bay and District.
